surgeons than ever before are building their own surgical centers or
operating rooms in which to perform surgery. This allows physicians
to have greater control over staffing, scheduling, procedures, and
supplies. While hospitals and outpatient clinics have generally met
the highest levels of accreditation, individually owned surgical
suites can opt out of some levels of accreditation. At the federal
level, centers wishing to be approved for Medicare reimbursement
must undergo a site inspection. At this time, approximately 90
percent of surgery centers are Medicare approved. At the state
level, forty-one states currently require inspections before a
surgery center may be opened for business. State officials or their
delegates perform these evaluations.
A
physicians decision to proceed with voluntary accreditation is a
sign that he has the ultimate safety and welfare of the patients in
mind. The willingness to undergo evaluation confirms that interest
because accreditation standards are high. The following are just a
few of the criteria necessary to receive and maintain accreditation:
- appropriately
trained personnel assisting in the provision of surgical
services
- life
support and monitoring equipment
- resuscitation
equipment
- an
anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist present during surgical
procedures
- operating
room designed and equipped so that surgery can be performed in a
safe manner
Ask your
physician whether his surgical facility (or the one in which he
operates) has received accreditation from one of the following
accreditation entities:
- American
Association for Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC)
- American
Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery
Facilities (AAAASF)
- Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
