are a non-surgical way of counteracting the effects of facial aging.
The injections are primarily used on the upper third of the face
to treat creases on the forehead (especially between the eyebrows)
and "squinting" lines around the eyes. It is considered
one of the few cosmetic procedures that can be [somewhat] reversible.
After the initial injection has worn off in about 3-6 months, a
patient can decide whether to proceed with another injection. If
the choice is not to continue with another injection, the appearance
will remain as it is.
Some important
facts about Botox injections:
- This procedure
was used in the early 1980s to treat muscle twitching around the
eyes.
- The botulinum
toxin A temporarily paralyzes the muscles across the forehead
and around the eyes.
- Some physicians
have started administering botox injections into the platysmal
bands (muscles that go from underneath the chin to the breastbone)
in the neck.
- Favorable
candidates are older patients who may not be medically suited
for surgery, or younger patients who wish to wait on more invasive
surgery.
- This procedure
can be a preliminary step to a forehead/brow lift, in which the
corrugator muscles are sometimes cut to eliminate the "scowl"
lines.

ALTERNATIVES
Actually, Botox is an alternative to surgery.
It can be used as the face is beginning to age, or can be used in
conjunction with other procedures to achieve a desired look. It
is an inexpensive way to see what changes might be permanently made
as a result of surgery. Botox can only do so much. Surgical intervention
is the only way to achieve a more lasting option.
THE
PROCEDURE
Botox injections are an in-office procedure and require no recovery
time. The effects can be seen within two to four days and can last
from three to six months, at which time the injections can be repeated.
Some patients experience a permanent decrease of deep lines and
furrows after repeated injections.
Anesthesia
Botox injections do not require anesthesia.
Level
of Pain/Discomfort
There is minimal discomfort during the injection. Some patients
may experience a headache for three or four hours after the injection.
RISKS/COMPLICATIONS
Improper placement of the injections can cause a temporary "droopy"
eyelid or other muscle laxity. This complication can occur if the
physician is inexperienced and places the injection in the wrong
muscle or if you do not follow your physicians instructions not
to rub the area that received the injection. To avoid these complications,
ask your physician how many times he has injected Botox and be sure
to follow his/her instructions carefully.
STILL
YOU
ONLY BETTER!
Botox injections are an effective and safe way to reduce the
signs of aging. Areas of your face and neck that have been treated
with Botox injections will look younger and more refreshed within
days of the procedure.
